Durres City
Durrës is home to an impressive set of ancient Roman ruins that draw many visitors to the city. Perhaps the most famous of these is the large Roman amphitheater, which dates back to the 2nd century AD and is one of the largest of its kind in the Balkans. The amphitheater, which could seat up to 20,000 people, provides a glimpse into Durrës’ history as an important Roman port city.
In addition to the amphitheater, Durrës also features well-preserved sections of its ancient Roman city walls. These formidable stone walls, built in the 5th century AD, once encircled and protected the entire city. Today, visitors can walk along portions of the walls and imagine the city’s bustling ancient past.
